Focus on Autonomy and Other Needs—Not Money—for Career Satisfaction

In the psychology field, for example, the author highlights a motivation theory called self-determination theory (SDT), which explains that three universal needs for achieving happiness: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Happiness and satisfaction, so says the theory, comes by satisfying these three needs. Instead of choosing to make career decisions based on these factors, people often focus on prestige and income—but as we know, making more money won't make you happier.
