The Weekly Improvement Process That Actually Sticks
Most attempts to get better at how you work follow a predictable arc. Something frustrates you enough to motivate change. You redesign your entire system on a Saturday afternoon. The new system works for two weeks. Then life gets in the way, the system erodes, and you are back to the old frustrations until the next Saturday redesign.
This cycle happens because the improvement effort is too large and too infrequent. Here is a process that breaks the cycle.
The Friday 15
Every Friday, spend fifteen minutes on one question: what was the single most friction-filled part of this week? Not a list. The one thing that slowed you down the most, frustrated you the most, or created the most rework.
Write it down in one sentence. Then spend five minutes asking whether there is a simple change to the process, the tool, or the habit that would reduce that friction. If yes, make that one change before you close your laptop. If the change requires more than twenty minutes to implement, schedule thirty minutes in the next week to do it. Not someday. A specific slot.
That is the entire ritual. Twenty minutes maximum. One friction identified, one change made or scheduled.
Why This Compounds
A single twenty-minute improvement session sounds trivial. Fifty-two of them is a different story. Over a year, you have made fifty-two targeted improvements to how you work, each one addressing a specific friction point that was actually bothering you. The changes are small individually. They compound because each one eliminates a recurring drag on your capacity and attention.
The professionals who are consistently getting better at their work are not doing dramatic overhauls. They are making small targeted adjustments regularly. The system stays current because it is updated weekly. The improvements stick because they address real friction, not hypothetical inefficiency.
Use AI for this process. Give it the friction you identified and ask for two or three simple changes that could address it. You will often get a solution you had not considered in two minutes. Reply with "systems" and I will send you the Friday 15 template I use every week.
