10 Ways to Brighten Up Your Office Workstation - Careers Articles

The best way to increase your productivity during the day is to make some changes to your workstation. Brightening up your workstation can give you the extra boost you need to get started on a new project or assignment.

Since your workstation is a small space, it only takes a few steps to making it feel like new.

Try these 10 tips in redesigning your office workstation:

1. Let there be light

Overhead fluorescent lighting, found in most offices, can be harsh on your eyes during the work day. Instead of using fluorescent lighting, invest in a floor lamp or desk lamp. In addition to adding a new light to the space, plug in a lamp that shows off your personality, whether it be a bright color or a funky lamp shade.

2. Rearrange furniture

Change up your scenery by moving your computer to another area in your office workstation. Adjust your monitor and keyboard so that they align properly with your wrists and eyes.

3. Office seating

The proper office chair is key to staying comfortable throughout your work day. If you can't invest in a new office chair, try adding a pillow to support your back, and adjust the height of the seat so you stay eye level with your computer. Even a simple touch, such as draping a colorful scarf over the chair, will be enough to give your workstation a new look.

4. Go green

Adding flowers or a small plant to the office workstation will give you the perfect piece of the outdoors that you need to stay motivated throughout your work day. Plus, flowers will bring a new, fresh scent to your workstation.

5. Stylish organization

Switch out your file folders and other organization supplies with new, brightly colored ones. It will be easier to stay organized with stylish supplies that reflect your personality and bring your design sense to your workstation.

6. Friendly Faces

Add photos of your family and friends to your workstation, but instead of pinning them up to the wall, keep them in frames on your desk. Having these friendly faces around will provide the boost you need when working through a tough day.

7. Fresh coat of paint

Even if you're limited in the range of colors you can paint your office, a fresh coat of paint can really brighten up the area. Stuck in a cubicle? Check with your boss, and see if it's OK to cover some of the walls in wallpaper or other colorful paper.

8. Surround yourself with inspiration

Include some of your favorite pieces of art in your workstation, from photographs of your favorite places to relaxing beach scenes. Keep it simple in your workstation by adding only a few art pieces to the wall in coordinating frames that pop. Are you a big sports fans? An avid scuba diver? A musical fanatic? Bring in a few pieces that hold good memories for you and keep them on your desk. Not only will they make you smile, they will be great conversation starters as well.

9. Cozy carpet

When changing the look of a small office workstation, make simple changes from the ceiling to the floor for ultimate impact. Switch out the traditional chair mat with a cozy carpet. The splash of color on the floor in addition to the plush fabric will turn the space from sterile to homey.

10. Disguise your desk

The typical workstation consists of a drab-looking desk. By adding some colorful place mats to your desk, it will look like new and feel a lot more like home.

The Top 10 Job Interview Deal-Breakers | Brand-Yourself.com Blog

While many people are working hard on building and maintaining a solid personal brand, I think it goes without saying that it doesn’t make one bit of a difference how great you look online if you screw up your job interview. There is simply nothing out there that can repair or make up for significant blunders that might take place.

I have interviewed some thousands of candidates over the years. So with all those situations in mind and having talked with many other hiring managers, I have come up with this list of top 10 job interview deal breakers – things you can say or do during your interview that will likely cause you to immediately lose your candidacy for the position:

  1. Showing up late and not mentioning a thing about it. (ex:. “I am so sorry I am late, there was an accident on the highway…. “) Being late can be okay if its just a few minutes (less than 5) and you immediately apologize.  But it’s much better if you call first – and have a good excuse.
  2. Not bringing items that were requested of you (ex: job application, work samples, etc) Is this how you will operate at work too?
  3. Improper dress attire. I have had many candidates ask me, over the phone or on email, how they should dress. I really don’t mind that question, it sure beats showing up in a t-shirt. And always iron your clothes!
  4. Lack of professionalism: chewing gum, checking your phone, using swear words, being rude, lack of eye contact or appearing bored, getting visibly frustrated or irritated when answering questions.
  5. Scheduling the interview during lunch and then abruptly ending it so you can get back to work. If you are a strong candidate and the company is interested in you, it’s not reasonable to think that you can have a full interview in 30 minutes  – one that allows you to fit the interview and drive time in within a one hour lunch.
  6. Not giving specific examples when asked. This is by far the most common blunder. If a hiring manager asks you for a specific example of something (ex: how you handled a difficult customer) do not respond, “oh, there are just so many times – I can’t really pick out just one but that was regular part of my job. I was always commended for how well I handled difficult issues and my manager said that was my top strength”.  Try something like this instead: “I had a customer who called in and she was very angry… and she said….  and this is what I said…. And then I did this… and this is how it was resolved….”
  7. When asked the question, “have you had a chance to review our website?” with, “no, I didn’t get a chance to do that yet”.  If you hadn’t, I hope you learned about the company some other way because you really need to have done your research on the company.  This will help you mold your answers to the interview questions and make them relevant to the company. It will also help you ask good questions. If you didn’t even look at the website then it will be assumed that you really don’t care if you work there – that you just want a job –anywhere.
  8. Getting caught in a lie.  Yes, this happens a lot. Many people will go into great detail when going over their work history or when answering questions and if you aren’t telling the truth – it will likely be very apparent.  I can’t tell you how many times I had to say to a candidate, “okay, I am confused. Earlier you had mentioned …… but now you are saying…?”  or “You are saying you did this after college…. but your resume says this…..?” Not good!
  9. Mentioning in the interview that another company has made you a job offer so you will need to know if you will be offered the job within 2-3 days. If you have other things going on, great! But keep it to yourself, because the company will not rush to make a decision in your time requirements, and you will just end up disqualifying yourself.
  10. When asked if you have any questions, you pull out a list that focuses squarely in on “what’s in it for me?” Asking questions only about vacation time, sick time, benefits, pay, etc. is not an acceptable thing to do. You need to be focusing in on the company and what you can offer and not on yourself.  Having no questions is not a deal breaker, but it’s close. However, there are times that can be overlooked. Especially if you had talked with someone else in the company and that person answered your questions ahead of time. But always try to ask questions. It shows you are interested in the job and the company.

I do want to mention one other one that didn’t make my list but makes many other lists.

Should you talk negatively about your past job or past manager? Generally, do not do this. But I have learned that some people really had some interesting and relevant experiences in past jobs and talking about them, in the right context – more factual and less emotional – can be okay.

If a past negative job experience must come up just state the facts and the situation using specific examples (“The company was bought out by another company.  The new President came in and cut everyone’s salaries and moved people into different positions”) without saying things like “I hated working there after that” or “he was just terrible! Everyone hated him!”  You must address this in an ultra-professional manner.

Acing a job interview is really a skill. You need to have a general idea of what employers want and need to hear, but because everyone is so different, there is a wide range of what works and what does not.  However, if you steer clear of doing these interview deal-breakers, you will significantly decrease your chances of being tossed out in the first round of the process.

How to Align Your Business Cards with Your Brand | Personal Branding Blog - Dan Schawbel

Business cards may seem extremely outdated in today’s technology-driven world. However, they are actually an important part of your brand. Think of business cards as a portable version of you and your brand – one that you hand out to other people to remember you by.

Design matters

An eye-catching design can say a lot about you and your brand. Check out these before and after designs. So, take the design process seriously, and just like every other part of your brand, think about what you want the design to say about you. Do you want to be sleek and successful? Dark and mysterious?

Size matters

A lot of people are into the small business cards these days. To me, they are quite annoying and easy to lose. After all, you want me (I assume) to be able to contact you at a later point. Sure, they’re cute, but these days, you have a lot of information to fit in an already small space. There’s no need to make your business cards smaller.

Content matters

Make it easy for your contacts to connect with you. Becoming completely elusive after meeting someone does not look good for your brand. If you’re always on Skype, include your Skype username. If you frequent Twitter, include your Twitter handle. Same goes for all the other social networks and possible means to contact you.

Oh yeah, and you probably want to include three to five words about your brand somewhere on your cards. For example: “Gen Y author, columnist & mentor.” Use your cards not only to provide contact information, but also to make a statement about your brand.

Digital matters

Let’s say someone lost your business card (small or otherwise). If you don’t have an online portfolio, you should at least have a digital business card. There are many options out there, and more seem to pop up every day. Make sure your digital design and content are consistent with your print business cards.

What other elements of a business card are important to your brand?

Steve Pavlina’s 5-Point Guide to Achieving Your Personal Branding Goals | Personal Branding Blog - Dan Schawbel

This week we’ll work on more effectively achieving your goals as you build your personal brand. Helping us today is personal development guru (and a top personal role model) Steve Pavlina, who is widely recognized as one of the most successful personal development bloggers on the web, attracting over two million monthly readers to his blog.

With a full-time job and outside hobbies, it can be difficult to regularly make time to build your brand. Use the tactics below to break through the clutter and achieve your goals.

1. Super Slow. Commit yourself to working on a particularly hideous project for just one session a week, 15-30 minutes total.  Purge 10 tagged Facebook photos that don’t back up your brand.  Write a few paragraphs of your first eBook.  Call a colleague to get feedback on how they perceive your brand (so you can improve it). Then stop. This is particularly effective for painful tasks that you’ve been avoiding. It’s easier to plow through them if you know you’ll only spend a small amount of time.

2. Dailies. Schedule a specific time each day for working on a particular task or habit.  One hour a day blogging or tweeting could leave you with a flourishing blog or a powerful and engaged Twitter network. Make it a regular part of your routine so that your dailies become second nature.

3. Add-ons. Tack a task you want to habitualize onto one of your existing habits.  Answer a question on LinkedIn related to your expertise after you eat lunch.  Send a written thank-you note or a let’s-catch-up note to someone in your network every time you cash your paycheck. These are fun to creatively tie to other events and are doubly satisfying when completed.

4. Mastermind. Run your problem past someone else, preferably a group of people.  Invite all the advice, feedback, and constructive criticism you can handle. What would your closest friends and mentors do? Integrate their feedback and see if it works for you.

5. Armageddon. Use overwhelming force to totally dominate your problem: as Steve says, “use a bazooka to kill a cockroach.”  Block out a two-day camping trip and bring nothing but a notebook and a full list of your accomplishments. Don’t pack up your tent until you’ve crafted the perfect three-sentence bio for yourself. With this approach, I find it helpful to focus on one problem and not give up until it is solved.

Bonus: Know when your work is “good enough.”

Before putting more effort into any task, ask yourself: Will anyone but me appreciate my efforts? Can I significantly improve this if I keep working? Does the possible gain in quality outweigh the lost time? If you’ve answered “no” to these questions, wrap it up and move on. If you’ve answered “yes,” map out what still needs to be done and do it – but nothing more. Perfectionism can slow you down just as much as procrastination.

What tactics do you use to make sure you get everything done related to your personal brand? Is it a daily or weekly routine, or just whenever you remember? Is it part of your corporate policy? I’d love to hear your personal stories and strategies you use to get things done for your brand.
